The Transductive Universe
Philosophy after Mind
A theory of becoming, built from the bottom up. About what it costs for anything to be the kind of thing it is, and how new kinds of things come into being at all.

The Book Spine
The book's thirteen chapters are arranged not as a ladder of ascent, but as a sequence of regimes, costs, closures, and ruptures.
Ontogony
The systematic study of how new regimes — with their own vocabularies, norms, and conditions of failure — come into being and pay the cost of staying.
Symbolic Exit
The sixth cognitive closure — the institutional-symbolic stratum in which tokens become authoritative constraints on their own realisation, enforced by Canon architectures (licensure, legal category, record) that are collectively revisable but maintained at continuous calorimetric cost across the polity.
Sixth Transduction
The structural analysis of the current AI moment as a specific architectural failure — Witness without Canon, Replicator without Renormaliser — and the question of what a genuine new stratum would require if it were to be installed rather than simulated.
Recursive Stack
The architecture by which transductive resolutions become substrates for further transductive resolutions, layer by layer, each level installing its own dominant variables and conditions of failure.
Finite Observer
Any physically embedded system that acquires information about its environment under the four structural constraints — embedding, diagonal, reflexive, and decoherence — that together seal off the Demon standpoint.
Witness–Canon Architecture
The coupled structure in which redundant environmental inscription (Witness) is paired with selective compression (Canon) to lift transductively installed individuals into the durable objectivity that makes them available as substrate for the next stratum.
Stratification Engine
The diagnostic form for genuine stratum installation — the appearance of an enveloping closure that takes a prior closure's constraints as its material, governed by the four diagnostic tests (breakdown signature, intervention, dependency, and revisability) and the revisability gradient.
Normogenesis
The emergence of enveloping closures whose function is to manage the instability of prior closures — mechanisms of synchronisation, selection, and exclusion that are always also mechanisms of capture, distinguished across strata by the revisability gradient.
Affective Witness
The interoceptive governance architecture that reads its own accounts — the third cognitive closure, in which precision-weighted prediction over the body's homeostatic variables is broadcast across the distributed cognitive apparatus, making trajectories through the allocentric frame felt rather than merely processed.
Offline Mind
The decoupled cognitive closure — the fourth and fifth cognitive strata — in which the organism can generate and price trajectories it has never traversed, by coupling the simulation engine to the Affective Witness through a seam whose failure taxonomy distinguishes it from every stratum below.
Constitutive Dissipation
The thesis that a regime's identity is not defined by what it is made of but by the continuous price — in joules of free energy per second — that it pays to keep itself from dissolving.
Cessation Signature
The regime-specific sequence in which a closure's achievements unravel when its funding is severed — dismantling the most energetically expensive commitments first, mapping by their order of collapse exactly what was being maintained.
Burn Rate
The rate of Gibbs free-energy dissipation — measured in watts, denominated in the regime's native currency — that a closure must sustain continuously in order to hold its constraint-architecture together.
Stratogonic Principle
A stratogonic level exists when and only when three conditions hold jointly — stabilised aspect-selection, a non-zero burn rate that regenerates the regime's own constraint-architecture, and a cessation signature whose order of collapse is regime-specific rather than merely thermodynamic.
Genesis Engine
The diagnostic form that identifies genuine regime installation — the appearance of a new constraint identity with dominant control variables non-constructible from the prior regime — as distinct from parametric saturation that merely exhausts an existing regime's possibilities.
Stabilisation Engine
The architecture by which the fragile singularities produced by transduction are lifted into durable objectivity through the coupling of redundant inscription (Witness) with selective compression (Canon), making the newly installed individual available as substrate for the next stratum.
Witness
Redundant environmental inscription that makes a newly installed individual publicly accessible — the mechanism by which a fragile singularity produced by transduction achieves durable objectivity through stable, reproducible readability by external systems.
Canon
The selective compression that reduces the flood of environmental inscription to a small set of load-bearing stable variables — structurally consequential forgetting that makes the Witness function useful by selecting which inscriptions govern further interaction.
Closure-Crisis Lemma
Every successful stabilisation, by exhausting the coordination space that permitted it, generates the metastable conditions for the next crisis — the Genesis Engine's exhaust is the Stabilisation Engine's fuel, and successful stabilisation accumulates coupling density faster than within-regime governance can absorb.
Bioelectric Governor
The tissue-scale dynamical control variable that governs morphogenetic targets independently of the genome — a gap-junction-coupled bioelectric attractor whose rewriting can redirect the tissue's construction plan while the parts list remains fixed.
Embodied Present
The allocentric spatial governance closure — the second cognitive stratum — in which vestibular, proprioceptive, and visual signals are integrated into a unified coordinate frame that makes the floor where the floor is, at a continuous metabolic cost that only becomes visible when the integration fails.
Transduction
The irreversible resolution of a metastable field through which a new regime — with its own vocabulary, norms, and conditions of failure — precipitates.
Individuation
The operation by which a determinate something precipitates from a metastable field — not the selection of an option, but the installation of a regime that did not exist as an option.
Metastability
A regime that occupies a local minimum in a free-energy landscape but carries unresolved potentials capable of crossing a threshold and installing a new regime.
The Virtual
Real but not yet actual — the structured field of potentials whose resolution would install regimes the prior register cannot describe.
Landauer Floor
The thermodynamic lower bound on any discriminating operation — no physical system can irreversibly erase one bit of information while dissipating less than kT ln 2 joules — establishing that discrimination is never free.
Flat Physicalism
The thesis that higher-level regularities are merely epistemic symptoms of finite-observer limitations — that macrostates are interaction-constituted equivalence classes with no ontological depth beyond the microphysical state they supervene on.
Metastable Field
A configuration that holds incompatible potentials in thermodynamic deferral — more than one crystallographic or structural future held simultaneously in a system that sits in a local energy minimum but not the global one.
Variation
The first function in the genesis triad — a field of incompatible potentials held in thermodynamic deferral, superabundant with futures that exclude each other, providing the structured tension that transduction will irreversibly resolve.
Encounter
The second function in the genesis triad — the discrete, irreversible transaction at the boundary between incompatible constraint-regimes that carries a metastable field across its nucleation barrier and commits it to a single resolution.
Mediation
The third function in the genesis triad — the ongoing governance that propagates constraint across the domain opened by Encounter, paid for continuously by the new regime's burn rate, transforming a transient event into a durable individual.
